A compelling perspective on the changes shaping hospitality, where strategy, technology, and experience come together to create competitive advantage.

In hospitality, growth is often associated with expanding scale, increasing room inventory, and standardizing the guest experience. Yet some businesses have built strong market positions through a different approach: maintaining a more intimate scale, nurturing a distinctive identity, and placing people at the center of every operational decision.

Mark Barnett – Owner and Managing Director of Cassia Cottage Phu Quoc Island – will bring this story to HORECFEX VIETNAM 2026.

His journey in Vietnam began in 1993, when he became involved in the development of the country’s spice industry in Hanoi. Over more than 25 years, he built and transferred several businesses exporting Vietnamese cinnamon and pepper, while creating employment for approximately 8,000 people and supporting the livelihoods of around 15,000 farming households.

That experience shaped a business philosophy deeply connected to people, communities, and local values. When he purchased land in Phu Quoc in 1998 and developed Cassia Cottage as a family retreat, he did not begin with the ambition of building a large-scale resort. Instead, he created a low-rise property with 60 rooms, expansive gardens, a strong focus on pure and thoughtful cuisine, discreet service, and a relaxed pace of stay.

Today, Cassia Cottage employs around 100 people and has built a strong reputation among discerning travelers from G7 and CIS markets. Its appeal does not come from extravagance, but from its ability to preserve a sense of intimacy, privacy, and authenticity throughout the guest experience.

One of the most valuable aspects of Mark Barnett’s session is his perspective on how a hospitality business can grow without losing its original spirit. From employee policies and guest care to product and space choices, Cassia Cottage continues to follow traditional Asian business and ethical principles, viewing fairness toward employees and the simple pleasures of guests as foundations for long-term success.

For investors, hotel managers, and independent accommodation businesses, this story offers an important point for reflection: rather than following every new trend, a brand can create a lasting advantage by understanding clearly what it stands for and remaining consistent with those values.

Because in hospitality, a memorable experience does not always come from scale. Sometimes, it is created through consistency, genuine hospitality, and simple values preserved over time.
