Discover Air New Zealand’s Skynest, a lie-flat sleeping experience for Economy and Premium Economy passengers on long-haul flights.

A lie-flat sleeping experience was once considered a privilege reserved for Business Class passengers. Air New Zealand, however, is changing that perception with Economy Skynest, a dedicated sleeping pod system designed for Economy and Premium Economy travellers on ultra-long-haul flights.

According to Air New Zealand’s latest updates, Skynest is now available for booking and is expected to welcome its first passengers from late December 2026 on selected nonstop services between Auckland and New York. The product will be installed on the airline’s new Boeing 787-9 V5 aircraft.

Six sleeping bunks between Economy and Premium Economy

Economy Skynest features six individual sleeping pods arranged in two columns of three-tier bunks. The dedicated area is positioned between the Premium Economy and Economy cabins.

Each bunk is approximately 2.03 metres long and 64 centimetres wide at shoulder level, narrowing to around 41 centimetres at the feet. The design allows passengers to lie completely flat instead of attempting to sleep upright in a conventional Economy seat.

Details of Air New Zealand's Skynest

Passengers must still purchase an Economy or Premium Economy ticket. They can then add a four-hour Skynest session to their booking. During the initial rollout, Air New Zealand plans to offer two Skynest sessions on each eligible flight.

Prices are expected to start from NZ$495 per four-hour session, excluding the cost of the passenger’s original airfare.

A hotel-inspired sleeping experience in the sky

Each Skynest pod includes a full-length mattress, pillow, fitted sheet and blanket. All bedding will be replaced between sessions to maintain comfort and hygiene.

The personal space also features a privacy curtain, soft ambient lighting, a reading light, adjustable ventilation, storage for small personal items, USB-A and USB-C charging ports, a seatbelt and a cabin crew call button.

Passengers get a "mini-hotel" experience

Passengers will also receive a “Nestcessities” amenity kit containing an eye mask, earplugs, socks, a toothbrush, toothpaste and skincare products from New Zealand brand Aotea.

Skynest sessions are scheduled outside the main meal-service periods. Passengers will receive notifications before their session begins. As the four-hour booking approaches its end, the pod lighting will gradually brighten to help them wake up more naturally.

Special rules for using Skynest

Each bunk is limited to one passenger. Sharing a pod or switching users during a session is not permitted. Passengers must also be at least 15 years old.

Food is not allowed inside the sleeping pods. Passengers may only bring water and are required to remove their shoes and wear clean socks. Air New Zealand also advises travellers to avoid strong fragrances or heavily scented products.

Due to its unique nature, Skynest comes with special rules

Skynest does not include a personal entertainment screen. Therefore, passengers who want to watch films or listen to music should prepare their own device and headphones.

Due to its bunk-style structure, entering the pods may require passengers to bend, kneel, crawl or climb a step. Users must be able to enter and leave independently or travel with someone who can assist them safely.

When aviation learns from the hospitality industry

Skynest is more than a new type of aircraft seat. It demonstrates how aviation brands can apply hospitality thinking across the entire customer journey.

Rather than focusing solely on transporting passengers from one destination to another, Air New Zealand has considered sleep quality, privacy, hygiene, personal comfort and physical recovery after a long flight.

The concept was developed over several years and tested with more than 200 customers. It also received the Innovative Cabin Concept Award at the 2023 Crystal Cabin Awards, one of the aviation industry’s leading recognitions for aircraft cabin innovation.

For the tourism and hospitality sectors, Skynest shows that the destination experience no longer begins at the hotel reception desk. It can start from the moment a traveller steps onto an aircraft.

As hospitality brands increasingly compete through personalisation, wellness and customer comfort, Skynest provides a valuable lesson. Innovation does not always require the creation of an entirely new service category. Sometimes, it begins by addressing one of the customer’s most fundamental needs: the ability to rest and recover more effectively.
