A busy hotel is not necessarily an efficiently managed asset. Behind revenue figures lie a wide range of considerations, including operating costs, service quality, commercial strategy, asset maintenance, and alignment between owners and management teams.
With more than four decades of experience in the hospitality industry, John Gardner – Managing Director and Co-Founder of Optimum Hospitality – will bring to HORECFEX VIETNAM 2026 a perspective shaped by multiple roles across the hotel ecosystem.
His career began with owning and operating three restaurants in New Zealand before moving into the management of 4- and 5-star hotels in Australia. He later held senior leadership positions with Accor and IHG across China, Thailand, Indonesia, and Cambodia, gaining extensive operational experience across diverse cultural and market environments.
One of the defining chapters of his career was more than 15 years with the Caravelle Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City. From serving as General Manager to later becoming General Director of the owning company, he was responsible not only for the guest experience, but also for maintaining the reputation, commercial performance, and long-term value of one of the city’s iconic hotels.
This experience on both the operational and ownership sides has given John Gardner a clear understanding of the gaps that often emerge between brand objectives, investor expectations, and the realities of day-to-day hotel management.
Following the COVID-19 period, he co-founded Optimum Hospitality to provide consulting, asset management, advisory, and independent hotel management services to owners and developers across Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on Vietnam.
At HORECFEX VIETNAM 2026, his session will offer a broader way of looking at hotel performance: not only through occupancy rates or short-term revenue, but also through the ability to protect the asset, improve operational quality, and make decisions that align with long-term investment objectives.
This perspective will be particularly relevant for hotel owners, developers, and management teams seeking to balance guest experience, financial performance, and the long-term value of their hotel assets.
